ABSTRACT:
Wiley is the largest society publisher, publishing with over 800 prestigious societies. Societies – defined as membership-based organisational bodies with a thematic focus – vary enormously in size and structure, but share a common focus in representing the interests of their members and in supporting the development of their fields. Many societies publish content, including journals – and some do a lot more, for example, regulating professional accreditation, providing expert consultation to government or industry panels, lobbying the Government on matters of import to the society, and advising universities and teaching institutions on the provision of student training.
Societies are generally very interested in maintaining the quality of their publications in terms of content and production – not least because, as Wiley have demonstrated in a large-scale cross-disciplinary survey – access to an association publication is the number one reason that people join societies. Having an impact – in both the scholarly community and the real world – is also very important to societies, as is remaining relevant to their membership, and attracting new members.
When engaging with societies, medcomms agencies and pharma need to remember that generating revenue – though necessary is not a society’s primary consideration. Stewardship of their brand is more fundamental. Working through the publisher, and focusing on a society’s aims and objectives, are also keys to effective engagement.
