ABSTRACT:

The second day of the ISMPP EU 2018 meeting explored some of this year’s key themes of patient centricity and data transparency.

The opening session on ‘The evolving transparency requirements in a complex multi-stakeholder environment’, featured presentations from Trish Groves (BMJ), Andy Powrie-Smith (The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, EFPIA), Anne-Sophie Henry-Eude (European Medicines Agency, EMA), Katherine Tucker (Roche) and Rafal Swierzewski (European Cancer Patient Coalition, ECPC). Delegates heard about the transition to ‘open science’ and the current state of data transparency from regulatory, industry and patient perspectives.

Next, Dr Mohammad Al-Ubaydli – physician and CEO of ‘Patients know best’ – delivered a keynote speech exploring the practical advantages of a secure online system allowing patients direct access to their health records.

The afternoon gave delegates a choice of parallel, multi-speaker panel sessions:

* The ‘Patient involvement in research and communication’ panel discussed the benefits of including patients in the publication, authorship and review processes, and the growing role that patients can play in direct partnership with industry.
* ‘The growing importance of real-world evidence’ session provided an overview of the rise in availability, utility, and demand for real-world evidence. At the same time delegates heard about the challenges facing wider recognition of real-world data.
* ‘Facing the challenges of publishing unfavourable, negative, equivalence or non-confirmatory data’ was the theme for the final parallel session, which discussed the difficulties and possible solutions for disseminating ‘unexciting’ results.

The meeting closed with a keynote presentation by Andy Powrie-Smith, focusing on the potential impacts of Brexit throughout the UK healthcare industry.
