ABSTRACT:
ORCIDs were primarily designed to disambiguate author and contributor names in scholarly publishing. An ORCID uniquely associates an individual with a persistent digital identifier, and its integration into research and publication processes supports automated links between individuals and their professional activities.
ORCIDs may be of particular interest to agencies on account of their potential to streamline manuscript submission/publication processes. So, in 2016, Caudex conducted a small study to assess the potential impact of ORCIDs on manuscript submission. Of 51 submissions to 45 journals with 21 publishers in the first half of 2016, only two required ORCIDs as part of the submission process, while 14 made no mention of ORCIDs. Of 10 authors who needed ORCIDs for submission to these journals, three had one already; the remaining seven were happy to create an ORCID when asked.
At the time of the study, ORCID use was optional for most submissions and did not present an obstacle to agency assistance with the process. However, in November 2016, Wiley announced the mandatory use of ORCIDs across their portfolio of journals, and other publishers have since followed suit.
ORCIDs have considerable potential for evolution and integration with interconnected systems that would be advantageous to authors and agencies.
