ABSTRACT:
The AMWA-EMWA-ISMPP Joint Position Statement, released in January 2017, is the first unified position statement on the role of professional medical writers. Bringing together three leading organisations in our industry: the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA), and the International Society of Medical Publications Professionals (ISMPP), the Joint Position Statement sets down global standards for professional medical writers for the first time, and replaces previous guidelines and position statements from the participating organisations.
The AMWA-EMWA-ISMPP Joint Position Statement consists of only two pages of text, comprising three short sections, together with an example template disclosure statement for professional medical writing support. The introduction clarifies the types of publications covered, i.e. articles and supplementary content for publication in peer-reviewed journals and materials for dissemination at scientific congresses. The second section sets out the responsibilities of professional medical writers in supporting authors and sponsors to disclose their research in peer-reviewed journals and at congresses, while section 3 describes the responsibilities of authors in complying with authorship criteria set out by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and in appropriately acknowledging medical writer support. The example template disclosure document clarifies how this can be done effectively.
Medical communications professionals need to read this Joint Position Statement, and medical communications organisations should update their publication policies accordingly.
