ABSTRACT:
Crossref is a not-for-profit membership organization for scholarly publishing that works to make content easy to find, cite, link, and assess. Founded in 2012 with a small set of 12 publishers, Crossref now has nearly 6000 publisher members, and a metadata store of over 85 million scholarly content items, primarily journal articles, but also books, book chapters, conference proceedings and a wealth of other content.
Publishers deposit metadata with Crossref to help researchers find content and drive traffic to their publications. In exchange, Crossref enables publishers to showcase additional information on publications, report and display corrections and retractions, and check submitted content for originality. A key aspect of the Crossref metadata is the DOI – digital object identifier – which helps to uniquely identify and link content in a way that a simple URL does not, enabling persistent citation linking. Supplementary metadata can include funding and licensing information; full text links, enabling text mining; and unique author ORCID identifiers – all of which is machine-readable.
Crossref makes its metadata freely available via an application programming interface (API) to enable the widest re-use possible among publishers, researchers, libraries, sponsors and affiliated organizations. Search interfaces enable researchers to find DOIs for references and look up articles of interest; and enable partner sites, such as ORCID, to link authors to publishers. Crossref further allow organisations to participate in enhanced metadata services to help with the provision of literature searches, document discovery and delivery, citation metrics and content aggregation, among other services.
