ABSTRACT:

A formal needs assessment ahead of the 9th European CME forum showed a clear trend towards stakeholders wanting practical guidance on developing, delivering and assessing CME activities, alongside clarification regarding the roles and responsibilities of key CME stakeholder groups, i.e. industry, accreditation bodies, medical societies and providers. Accordingly the meeting offered nine workshops across three parallel sessions, on topics such as: How to evaluate CME activities, How to do CME effectively; Navigating compliance challenges, and Patient-centred outcomes-based planning. Specialist seminars towards the end of the forum allowed discussion of the learning outcomes within stakeholder groups.

Interesting developments emerged across all sectors:

  • Medical societies and associations realising that they have shared challenges. An ongoing dialogue is to be facilitated by the Journal of European CME (JECME)
  • The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) are launching updated accreditation standards from 1/1/2017, and shortening their review times. A trend is emerging towards the acceptance of common quality standards by different accreditation bodies.
  • The International Pharmaceutical Alliance for CME (iPACME) and European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) have developed guiding principles on how industry should be supporting medical education, which separates independent and industry-sponsored CME. EFPIA are now looking at how to incorporate these into their code.
  • Academic and professional providers developing greater clarity regarding their roles and remit, and seeking recognition and guidance in how to develop high quality independent education. Whether this might spell the end of medcomms agency involvement in CME remains to be seen
