ABSTRACT:

Continuing medical education (CME) generally refers to the third phase of medical training, which takes place after doctors have specialised, and accounts for a surprising 10 per cent of all the medical education they receive throughout their careers.

CME in Europe is provided by various organisations, chief among them the medical societies and associations, the pharmaceutical industry and its agencies, and professional CME providers. The rise of CME accreditation alongside increased compliance requirements has seen a trend towards greater accountability on the part of both industry and the medical societies, together with a shift in industry approaches to funding CME. Medical societies have seen a reduction in income from industry marketing spend allocated to conference activities generally, while now being able to attract educational grants for formal CME, for example CME-accredited conference sub-specialty meetings and e-learning. Professional CME providers have evolved into a dedicated sector that likewise seeks grants from industry to develop education to address identified practice gaps, and is industry-independent and CME compliant.

CME accreditation is very much more than the rubber-stamping exercise it once was. It drives standards in promoting education that addresses educational needs, acts as a guarantee of quality education, free from industry bias, and is used by individual doctors for re-licensing and recertification. All parties are now looking increasingly towards the common goal of developing education that is designed to improve the competence and performance of healthcare professionals.
