ABSTRACT:

Continuing Medical Education (CME) began developing as a discipline in 2000, when medical societies first started setting up CME accreditation bodies. There followed a general shift towards a pan-European CME system. However, the terminology was not standardised, and the different stakeholder groups – the pharmaceutical industry, agencies, medical societies and accreditation bodies were operating in silos. In 2007, Peter Llewellyn and Eugene co-organised the first European CME Forum in London, with the aim of bringing together interested parties to address these challenges, share perspectives and discuss developments in the field.

The 2007 European CME Forum was so valued that it has taken place each year since, evolving considerably in line with participant feedback. Significant parallel developments over the intervening years have included the following.

* Establishment of the Good CME Practice (gCMEp) group.
* Establishment of European CME Forum ‘day 0’ meetings by special interest groups, such as gCMEp.
* Establishment of the International Pharmaceutical Alliance for CME (iPACME).
* Founding of the Journal of European CME (JECME.eu) as an online, open access journal.
* The ninth European CME Forum (#9ECF) in Amsterdam, 2016, being held in conjunction with the European Union for Medical Specialists (UEMS).

There now exists a community of CME professionals in Europe and beyond, driven by CME principles to promote best practice, and working towards common goals.
